Timber specialist gives sustainability guarantee
2009-08-10
A Shropshire firm has further strengthened its green credentials by adding full environmental traceability to its timber products.
Lowfield Timber Frames, based at Marton, on the Shropshire/Powys border, has completed accreditation that guarantees to its customers that its products are made from timber sorced from sustainably managed forests.
The firm supplies timber frame products for projects of all sizes across the UK and recently achieved the international quality mark ISO 9001, which highlights its commitment to the quality of both its working practices and products.
Now it has added to that achievement with independent approval for its Chain of Custody procedures, which demonstrate to customers that the wood in its products has been sourced from forests approved by the Forest Stewardship Council or the Programme for the Endorsement of Certified Forests.
Lowfield Timber Frames managing director, Mark Phillips, explained:
“In essence, we’ve been approved for our procedures which ensure that the source of the timber we use can be accounted for all the way through the chain to us and on to our customers. When you buy a timber product labelled FSC or PEFC you are saying ‘no’ to the destruction of the world’s forests and ‘yes’ to responsibly and well-managed forests and woodland.
“This doesn’t mean a change to our own buying practices, but it is the introduction of a formal system to give everyone in the chain confidence. We check the credentials of our suppliers and our customers can check ours. Our team has once again done a great job to ensure that this is in place and is firmly embedded as part of our working practices.”
Lowfield Timber Frames, part of the SJR Group, employs around 40 people at its 20,000sq ft Marton factory.
The SJR Group also includes SJ Roberts Construction Ltd and homebuilder, Wyro Developments Ltd.
